White Elephant Game highlights and such

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were very fun filled and food filled at Ben and Amanda's. We had an awesome White Elephant Gift exchange on Christmas Eve and enjoyed our attempt at Gingerbread Houses on Christmas Day. Mostly we ate and ate and ate!!!!

So most people know that Disneyland is both beautiful at Christmas and BUSY!!! We lucked out. It was beautiful and not crazy busy. Mark and I and our kiddos took our time and got to Disneyland around 10am. The cousins got there early to do some things with the characters so we caught up with them. The Teacups was the first ride that we went on. Michael and Mommy and Kathryn got on and boy did we go fast!!!

Mark and I and our family had quite a glorious day. Besides the fact that several of us were ill and all were sleep deprived, Lauren and Kyle's wedding day was perfect!!!!

It started early and ended late with a beautiful spiritual start at the temple with a perfect Wedding at 12 noon. We all then took pictures and gathered at Lakeside Wedding Venue on the NW side of Las Vegas for a fun filled wedding reception which included great food, fun friends, silly photos and grooving on the dance floor. The Bride and Groom spent their first night in the Honeymoon Suite at Planet Hollywood and on to San Diego for their Honeymoon.

Kathryn in line for the Hayride. She got yummy apple cider and and apple cider doughnut!

Kathryn's PreSchool went to Boyd's orchard last week. Elizabeth went with us and boy was it a perfect fall day for the kids!

On top of it being a wonderful day for the kids, Mom got to visit with a very wonderful friend of the Moodys, Karen Allen who what there with her grandkids. What a treat that was, too.

We found some pumpkins, picked some apples, and Kathryn played and played and played on all of the slides, on the haystacks and on the play ground equipment. Autumn Heaven!

Today was the Primary Program. Kathryn sang out full board and Elizabeth, Michael and I enjoyed it very much. Kathryn said her part very clearly and said that she did it all by herself "because she's 5 now".

Halloween Snacks for PreSchool

So we had some fun with Kathryn's Snack day. First we started with round sugar cookies and made them into mummies. Then Kathryn colored some eyeball and some fingers and we taped the little signs to mason jars. In the jar labeled eyeballs, we put grapes and in the mason jar with the label of fingers, we put fresh green beans. Kathryn got a big kick out of this!

I'm Finally 5!!

Kathryn has been in high anticipation for a couple weeks. Turning 5 is a BIG deal!!

We celebrated as a family by going to Chuck E Cheeses and running around there for a fun time.

First Grandma Moody sent a fun,

sparkly, purple skirt and leggings

that were worn for days before the BIG day.

Then for Kathryn's birthday, she requested that she have Star Wars cookies because she thought that her friends would love them. And upon finding out that there was a princess in Star Wars, it was even better.

Then for the birthday cake, Mommy made a "Tangled" tower!! By the time that Kathryn's birthday rolled around it was leaning a little but boy was it yummy for the kids!

For the Birthday fun, Kathryn had a party where the kids ran an played, had cake, and played, opened presents and played. There were balloons and Poprocks for some fun, too.

All in all the birthday girl was a little tired, to say the least.

So today in the mail, Kathryn got a Birthday Surprise!

Grandma and Grandpa Moody sent her this smashing purple skirt and leggings set.

To say that Kathryn was excited would be an understatement.

She put them on and didn't take them off until bed time and announced that she'd be wearing them all day tomorrow. She went on 3 different errands including a trip to the farm in her cute outfit

We think that Grandma and Grandpa hit the nail on the head with this birthday surprise!

Ear Candling

I am not sure if there is a verb "candling" but that's what we did. Here is Michael with an ear candle in his ear. Michael, Jonathan and Kathryn all did this and the results were good-you might know what that means

Ear Candles are great. They are a little tricky but they do a good job at extracting ear wax. When the Dr said that Kathryn's ears were pretty full, I remembered the ear candles and found them at "Good Foods" for about $5 a set. Kathryn said that everyone should lay down on the ground to do this so that's what they did. It was quite the site. Everyone cut open their candles when they were done and saw all of the wax that came out. Yucky!!!

From the Pan and Into the Fire

So we have had quite the week. This all started Saturday afternoon with Kathryn having an acute asthma attack. We took her to one hospital where she was stablized but not ok on her own. They then had her transferred to UK Childrens Hospital ER and then into ICU for two nights. Mark was her buddy for two nights in ICU because Elizabeth couldn't be there with us so Mommy had to stay with baby at home at night.

Kathryn and Dad had Daddy Daughter Sleepovers in the ICU for 2 nights. What troopers!!

So we finally saw the miracle of the oxygen mask coming off. Kathryn fell asleep and knocked it off. Her vitals stayed steady so we watched them for a while and they stayed ok. Kathryn's test would be to maintain at least the minimum over night. So Mommy and Elizabeth gave Daddy a much needed night time break and the girls had a sleepover! It was a pretty good night with Mommy trying to sleep on a creaky bed, feed E. and keep an eye on K. Surprisingly, we all got a decent amount of sleep-just choppy. So after some more follow up check ups and appointments with her Pediatrition and Allerist, Kathryn was discharged and very happy about that, as were we all!

Kathryn was checked in the morning and she passed the test!!!

With Kathryn now out of ICU, Elizabeth could come cheer big sis up :)

Kathryn was so grateful for all of the prayers and letters and cards and balloons and visits. I don't think that she'll forget any of it. She cried sweet tears when she found out that her cousins were praying for her. Then she did again when her teacher from last year called to talk to her. She was just beaming with the good feelings from all of the support and love. Thank you to all of you who turned to the Lord on her behalf. This was a huge ordeal for her little 4 year old body. We are blessed very blessed.

we had a wonderful Baptism for Florence on Saturday Afternoon.

She has been coming to church with us for a while and we've truly enjoyed getting to know her and her son.

Mark could speak French with her to help answer her questions. Florence asked Mark to baptize her in French. It was really great to hear him and wonderful to see her so happy after years of difficulty. We are grateful to be a part of her baptism and new beginnings.

Well, there is a cupcake movement in our home this week. Lauren is on her second batch and this time chocolate. Over time I have collected the sprinkles from Pilbury Frosings, if I don't use them. The frosting with the sprinkles is the same price as the frosting without. So I'd buy the ones with sprinkles and save the sprinkles. These have really come in handy for moments like this when the baking and fun is very unplanned and at the end of a tight budget week. See for yourself how cute and easy:

Kathryn was sooooo excited this morning for her first day of pre-school.

She decided to wear her sparkle shoes (Toms that her big sis gave her for Christmas) and wear a bow instead of a headband.

I was so happy to be able to get back to the temple in Louisville. After I picked Mark up at the airport, he took care of Elizabeth while I went through a session. Oh boy do I love the peace I feel there. What a serene place to gather my thoughts and "fill my bucket" for life's challenges!

Peach Pie

I tried to make my first peach pie ever. It was delicious and not helpful in my weight loss goals!!!
Thank you "Southern Living" magazine for this gem:

Brown Sugar -Cinnamon Peach Pie
(I made my own crust)
8 large fresh, firm, ripe peaches (about 4 pounds)
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/8 tsp salt
1 1/2 Tbsp butter, cut into pieces
1 large egg-beaten
1 1/2 Tbsp granulated sugar
Preheat oven to 425
peel peaches and cut into 1/2 inch thick slices and cut slices in half
Stir together: brown sugar, granulated sugar, Cinnamon, salt, butter and 1/4 cup flour
Add Peaches.
Stir to coat peaches.
Immediately spoon peach mixture into piecrust in pie plate.
Carefully place top layer of piecrust on top and seal edges.
Brush top with eggs and sprinkle with sugar
Freeze pie for 15 mins. Meanwhile, heat a jelly-roll pan in oven 10 mins
Place pie on hot jelly-roll pan.
Bake at 425 on lower oven rack for 15 mins
Bake at 375 for 40 mins
Cover loosely with aluminum foil (to not over brown pie) and bake 25 more mins
Transfer to wire rack and cool 2 hours before serving (if you can wait that long!)

The Ferry Ride on the KY River

The Ferry at Tates Creek on the Kentucky River is the oldest running business in Kentucky.

Lauren is at the Watermarks for the flooding down there. The floods from last spring aren't up yet but they were about 2 feet shy of the highest mark and caused many homes and a church to be condemned.

Over the weekend we got to spend time with our cousins. Mom's sister, Becky and her husband and kiddos came for a visit at the tail end of their marathon cross country "vacation". We are in awe at their travel skills!

We ate well, visited and created plenty of fun and chaos.

We saw the countryside, the Kentucky River, Keenland and an inferno of a BBQ creation in our own backyard.

And only one had the same expression the whole time. . .

It was a really fun new way to escape the heat for the girls. There were bowling shoes, fun yellow bowling balls and helper ramps. Kathryn tried the big kids way a few times and knocked over a lot of pins!

The Night with the Reds

So with conflicting schedules, we were destined to be home for the 4th.
We threw around some ideas for family fun and low and behold there was a Reds game AND it was Fireworks Friday, too!

We were all excited to check it out but no one was as excited as Mark who hasn't been to see his Reds since about 1983.

It was perfect warm summer weather. We had great seats with a view of the river. We were all very impressed with the skyline of Cincinnati and the whole stadium there where the Reds play.

We had some fun snacks and watched the game.

Elizabeth was featured on the mega tron screen at one point- a budding star!!

The fireworks were amazing. Kathryn huddled by Mom and Elizabeth slept through the whole thing.

We finished off our eventful Friday with a science project or two in Kathryn's class.

First, we showed the dead bumble bee we found in the yard the day before. ooooooh!

Second, we made secret messages/pictures with lemon juice. Ahhhhhh!

Third, we made gooey ooooey slime for everyone to see and feel. Clap!!!!

Overall, it went well but not flawlessly. Thank goodness pre-schoolers are completely thrilled with big brothers and baby sisters visiting, putting hands in weird stuff, and messing around with juice!

At pre-school today we had a very big day!!! It was Derby day!!

Each class wore their class t-shirts, their team colors, donned their derby hats and ties and brought their horsies to the races.

They lined up and sang, "My Old Kentucky Home" and touched our hearts.

Then they, class by class, raced with grace and speed!

The camera's were flashing and the crowd was cheering. There was the parade of horses and class pictures to top the event off.

You could have bet on some great horsies today!

As opposed to Easter in Las Vegas, which did happen for Mark, Lauren and Jonthan :) We had a nice rainy Easter. That Easter Bunny was quick! Mommy didn't even see him run around putting all of the eggs down! So We invited Danielle over and hunted with elbows out! Kathryn got the head start and then the big kids got to jump in. In all of the fun, Miss Elizabeth just napped away. Happy Easter to all of our family and friends!

Oh Kathryn!!

Mark has worked so hard to get Kathryn to play with him. K is a natural Mamma's girl. So with a new baby coming, Mark worked on getting Kathryn to play with him while Mommy took care of Elizabeth. Kathryn started to cave!
Mark was so excited :)

So a couple days ago, they were playing. Now Kathryn doesn't like to lose so when they were "racing" and Mark "won", K was not happy.
They worked it out so that Kathryn was the one to call the race. "On your marks, get set, go!" Mark ran the course in the house. As he, the soul runner and eminent winner, came into the finish line, Kathryn yelled, "Belle won!"
Mark said, "Who's Belle?! I won!" he was laughing at her quick thinking in NOT letting Daddy win but letting her new imaginary friend win. OH BROTHER!
So today whenever they played there was the threat of a "Belle" move on Kathryn's part.
When they played "school" and Daddy raised his hand as the one and only student and with the right answer, Belle kept getting called on.
When Daddy said that he'd play "ride the horse" (in the pictures), Belle was on the other knee beside Kathryn.
The "Belle" factor is going to be legend.

4 plus years ago, Laura and I had Kathryn and Nadia on the same day. We had fun being preggers together and were oh so close to having our girls together again!! Sophia was born 2 weeks ahead of Elizabeth. At least we had fun sharing our baby shower together. Laurel had such a nice spread of goodies and was the bestest hostess!! We love the ladies that came a visited with us and held our precious girls. It was a wonderful evening with great people!

We had a nice Sunday.
We have been able to talk via email, phone and Skype with everyone in the family over the past several days. I caught this sibling moment today while we were together at home. . .

So Dad has been working on Kathryn for a while now. He'd say, "When Elizabeth gets here, it's you and me." You know how Kathryn is a Mamma's girl. Well, she'd fight with Dad about this every time. We'd all laugh and the joke would start again.

So this morning when I came in to the kitchen to this "teamwork" scene, I HAD to pull out the camera to gather proof of it- Daddy and Kathryn working together to get the Sunday roast in the oven! So cute :)
